Steep hike in fare will kill Delhi Metro: Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi, Nov 25 (IBNS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said he feels that the steep hike of Delhi Metro fare will 'kill' the transport system.

"This steep hike in metro fare will kill Delhi Metro. If people stop using it, then what purpose does it serve?," Kejriwal tweeted.

A RTI query as revealed that the Delhi Metro lost three lakh commuters a day since fares were hiked on Oct 10, media reports said.

The Delhi metro passengers now have to pay Rs. 10 more from  Oct 10 if they travelled beyond five km.

This was the second fare hike in a span of five months.

The new fare structure: upto two km- Rs 5/-, 2 to 5 km- Rs 20/-, 5 to 12 km-Rs 30/-, 12 to 21 km- Rs 40/-, 21 to 32 km- Rs 50/- and beyond 32 km- Rs. 60/-.

Meanwhile, the smart card users continue to enjoy a discount of 10% discount on each ride.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has opposed the fare hike move.

After the RTI revelation, AAP tweeted: "RTI has revealed that Delhi Metro lost 3 lakh commuters a day after fare hike on October 10. This is the reason CM @ArvindKejriwal was citing while opposing the metro fare hike."
