States must generate funds from own resources for farm loan waiver says Finance Minister Arun Jaitley

New Delhi, Jun 12 (IBNS): Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Monday that states should generate funds from own resources for farm loan waivers,, according to media reports.

The recent agitation by farmers in several states in India, demanding farm loan waivers and other measures, to boost the agricultural sector, has resulted in many states planning to waive loans.

In states such as Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, the protesters turned violent, even resorting to vandalising property, media reports said.

In Madhya Pradesh, police had to resort to firing to disperse the vandalising crowd, which resulted in the death of six people.

The states are contemplating bank loan waiver schemes for farmers, according to media reports.

But the finance minister has made it clear that he has nothing to say as part of the Union ministry except that states should organiser their own funds to offer the loan waiver schemes to farmers, media reported.
