Southwest Monsoon hits Kerala

New Delhi, June 6 (IBNS): The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said the south west Monsoon hit the south Indian state of Kerala on Friday.

"India Meteorological Department has declared onset of monsoon over Kerala today i.e. on 6thJune 2014," the IMD said in a statement.

The rainfall  over Kerala has been  fairly widespread for the last 48 hours. 

The IMD said out of the 14 rainfall  monitoring stations for Monsoon onset over Kerala, more than  70 percent of stations have reported rainfall higher than 2.5 mm for last consecutive two days (June 5 and June 6).

The IMD said: "Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest Monsoon into remaining parts of south Arabian Sea, some parts of central Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Kerala, some parts of south Karnataka, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, and west central Bay of Bengal during next 2-3 days. Conditions continue to  remain favourable  for further advance of southwest Monsoon into some parts of northeastern states during next 48 hours."
