Guwahati, Dec 29 (IBNS): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Saturday laid the foundation stone of the new campus of National Disaster Response Force’s (NDRF) 1st Battalion at Amsing NC, Sonapur in Assam’s Kamrup (Metro) district.

Speaking on the occasion, the Assam CM said that NDRF has always been playing a stellar role during natural calamity in the spheres of disaster management in the country and people of the country depend on their services during such critical times.

Referring to the recent incidents of boat capsize in Brahmaputra and drowning of a family in Dikhow River in Sivasagar, Sonowal said that during both these occasions NDRF played a key role.

He also said that NDRF is a key pillar in the country’s disaster preparedness mechanism and NDRF and SDRF are both providing services during critical situations which have been instrumental in saving both life and property.

The Assam CM also highlighted the need to create awareness among people for disaster management preparedness.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always pushed for the rapid development of Northeast region and his initiatives under Act East Policy have opened up newer vistas of growth for the region while bringing ASEAN countries closer to NE for trade and business. Communication infrastructure has been rapidly developed as roads, waterways and airways have seen massive growth in the region due to the Prime Minister’s initiatives,” Sonowal said.

Rijiju said that laying the foundation stone of both the battalion campuses of NDRF in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh has marked a new beginning for disaster management initiatives for NDRF in the northeast region which suffers from frequent natural calamity occurrences.

He also said that professional approach in disaster management is a must and other countries are following India’s disaster management model.  He also highlighted better efficacy of NDRF’s relief and rescue operations in the region in view of permanent helicopter service started by the Force.

Director General of NDRF Sanjay Kumar, Minster of State for Revenue and Disaster Management Bhabesh Kalita, Principal Secretary of Revenue and Disaster Management Rajesh Prasad were also present among others.
