Sonia Gandhi condemns Kenya university attack
"Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi has condemned the terror attack on a University Campus in #Kenya," Congress tweeted.
"Expressing anguish & pain,Smt.Gandhi said that only barbaric & inhuman groups/individuals could carry out such acts in premises of education," read another tweet.
"Any ideology or religion can not and should not justify such acts, Smt. Gandhi added. #Kenya," the party said in another tweet.
The death toll in early Thursday's attack on the Garissa University campus in north-eastern Kenya rose to 147 even as troopers of the country cleared the area taken over by the Islamist al-Shabab terrorists, officials said.
The Somalia-based outfit attacked the campus after dawn on Thursday and later took refuge in a dormitory with hostages.
While mostly students were killed, about 79 were injured. Over 500 were rescued though from the clutches of the terrorists.
Four terrorists were also killed after Kenyan troops launched a counter assault on the final building where the insurgents had holed up for over 12 hours.
An overnight curfew has been issued in parts of the country.
