Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehendi got bail on Thursday in a 2003 human trafficking case after Punjab and Haryana High Court suspended his jail term, media reports said.

The singer was sentenced to two years in jail on March 16, 2018, by a Patiala court but was later released on bail.

On July 14 this year, a Patiala court upheld the 2018 verdict and ordered Mehendi's immediate arrest.

According to media reports, he approached the high court on July 20 after the Patiala district court upheld the two-year jail term.

“His sentence has been suspended, which means that he will be out on bail, pending proceedings before the high court,” his lawyer, Arshdeep Singh Cheema was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

Mehendi was held guilty under Sections 420 (cheating) and 120-B (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

The court had pronounced him guilty of illegally sending people abroad disguised as members of his troupe.

A total of 31 cases have been filed against Daler Mehndi and his brother Shamsher Singh.

The cases were lodged by Patial Police based on a complaint by a person named Bakshish Singh.

He alleged that Daler Mehendi and his brother had taken 'passage money' to assist them migrate to the US illegally.

However, the brothers failed to do so, and Singh filed the complaint.

Furthermore, Singh also said that the singer had taken money for taking him to Canada
