Sikkim: Landslide destroys NHPC's 510 MW power station in Teesta Stage 5 dam

Balutar (Sikkim): A massive landslide on Tuesday morning destroyed the power station of NHPC's 510 MW Teesta Stage 5 dam in Balutar, Sikkim.

The hill adjacent to the power station had been unstable for weeks, with frequent minor landslides, but on Tuesday morning, a large portion of the hill gave way, demolishing the power station.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, as the station had been evacuated days prior due to the risk of landslides. Workers nearby captured the event on their phones.

The Teesta Stage 5 dam had already become inoperative following the October 2023 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) across the Teesta River Basin, which destroyed the dam in a devastating flash flood. Reconstruction efforts were underway when the landslide occurred.
