New Delhi, Jan 10 (IBNS): Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit has been appointed as the new party chief in the union territory.

Dikshit, 80, served as the chief minister between 1998 and 2013.

She succeeded Ajay Maken who resigned from the post on January 4 owing to his heath reasons.

Maken took to Twitter to congratulate Dikshit. He said: "Congratulations and best wishes to Sheila Dikshit ji for becoming party chief. Under her leadership, I had an opportunity to learn by working as the parliamentary secretary and cabinet minister. I am confident the Congress, under the leadership of Sheila ji, will be able to form a strong opposition against Modi and Kejriwal governments."

Dikshit also had a brief stint as the Kerala governor in 2014.
