Shashi Tharoor thanks PM Modi for lauding his speech at Oxford University
New Delhi, July 23 (IBNS): Hours after Narendra Modi lauded Shashi Tharoor for his speech at the Oxford University, the Congress leader on Thursday thanked the Prime Minister for his praises.
"Absolutely gracious of @narendramodi ji but yes, @INCIndia 's demands remain: Standards of integrity must be upheld," Tharoor tweeted.
A day after Congress President Sonia Gandhi reprimanded Shashi Tharoor, Modi on Thursday praised him for his speech at the Oxford University.
"Whatever Shashi Tharoor said in the Oxford debate went viral on YouTube," Modi said while addressing a gathering of parliamentarians in New Delhi, at the Speaker's Research Initiative.
Congress leader Sachin Pilot also tweeted: "Very kind of @narendramodi Ji to praise @ShashiTharoor in Parliament but let's move on to real issues now. We still call for resignations!"
Lok Sabha MP Tharoor made an argument in favour of demanding reparation payments from the UK to India for 200 years of its colonial rule.
What he said at a debate at the University of Oxford became a hit a hit on social media like Facebook and YouTube.
"India's share of the world economy when Britain arrived on its shores was 23 per cent," the former union minister had said.
"By the time the British left it was down to below 4 per cent. Why? Simply because India had been governed for the benefit of Britain. Britain's rise for 200 years was financed by its depredations in India," he said, debating: 'This house believes Britain owes reparations to her former colonies'.
On Wednesday, Sonia Gandhi pulled up Tharoor for not following the party line.
Sonia's reprimand of Tharoor came at a time when the Congress was going aggressive against the government over various scams, vowing not to allow Parliament to run till the government took action.
The Congress has been demanding the resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and the chief ministers of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh over Lalitgate and Vyapam scam.
