Shall fight the suit boot ki sarkaar : Rahul Gandhi
Chavakkad, Kerala, May 27 (IBNS) Holding the refrain of "suit boot ki sarkaar," Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday vowed to fight for the rights of fishermen while accusing the Narendra Modi Government of taking away their access to seas by extending the ban on trawler fishing.
"The government is trying to take away the rights of seas from fishermen as it was taking away precious land of farmers...We shall fight against it...We are not scared of Narendra Modi and his five or six friends in suits," he said while interacting with fishermen in a village in Thrissur district.
He was referring to the Centre deciding to extend a ban on trawler fishing to 61 days from 45 days as part of measures to safeguard marine wealth,.
Gandhi had wished "the suit boot ki sarkaar a happy birthday" as the BJP-led Government celebrated its one year in office at the Centre.
On Wednesday he said, "At the birthday party yesterday, only people in suits and boots were celebrating."
The Congress vice president, who has been spearheading his party's attack on the Modi Government for it being "anti-poor" and "anti-farmer", had dubbed it "suit boot ki sarkaar" referring to the name-striped suit that PM Modi wore during the visit of US president Barack Obama to India.
"The NDA wants to destroy the law that protects the farmer. Land has become gold in India. They want to give the gold to their friends," he said.
"They are not picking a fight with poor fishermen, tribals and farmers, they are picking a fight with the soul of the country... "Land is the farmers's mother, the sea is your mother and they want to take your mother away from you," Gandhi said.
