Senior BIMSTEC officials meet in Kathmandu, Nepal plans to hold summit in 2017

Kathmandu, Feb 7 (IBNS): The 17th session of BIMSTEC senior officials' meeting, being held in Kathmandu, Nepal, is likely to decide on the date of the fourth summit on Tuesday, according to media reports.

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) countries includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Nepal is the current chair of the regional body. Shanker Das Bairagi, foreign secretary and head of the Nepali delegation, is chairing the meeting.

Prime Minister of Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has said his country is committed to hosting the fourth Bimstec Summit by the end of this year, according to media reports.

Nepal was scheduled to host the fourth summit in 2016 but had to be postponed owing to the 2015 earthquake and other issues, reported the local media.

The meeting of the BIMSTEC--BRICS outreach summit was held in Goa in October 2016.
