Hyderabad/UNI: The 24-hour Janata curfew, as a part of the fight against the global pandemic, evoked good response in Telangana with the state witnessing a self-imposed complete shutdown on Sunday.

Life came to a standstill as the people remained indoors and the usually busy streets and roads wore a deserted look. All shops and other establishments and hotels remained closed.

Essential services like milk supply, vegetables and petrol bunks were unaffected as they were exempted from the curfew.

Barring police personnel and paper boys, the shopping areas and streets normally throbbing  with crowds were  completely shut and lonely.

The roads were devoid of vehicular traffic as the state road transport corporation buses, cabs and private vehicles remained off the roads.

While the entire country is observing the Janata curfew from 0600 hrs to 2100 hrs on Sunday, Telangana is doing it for 24 hours till 0600 hrs on Monday.

On the eve of the Janata curfew, Chief Minister KChandrasekhar Rao had appealed to the people to express solidarity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi who gave the call for the  curfew.

He also urged the people to come out of their houses at 1700 hrs and clap their hands to express their solidarity with the medical fraternity who are working to keep other people safe from the COVID-19.

Reports from districts said that the janata curfew had evoked good response as normal life came to a standstill.

The state government had posted teams to carry out checks at inter-state borders as part of the efforts to check the spread of coronavirus.
