Guwahati, Aug 6 (IBNS) : The second “Karbi Anglong Day” was celebrated at Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium in Guwahati on Saturday

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Chief Guest at the celebration, said that Karbi Anglong district is rich in flora and fauna and that the state government has taken a slew of measures to turn it into an organic hub.

Sonowal also said development of surface communication of Karbi Anglong is a must to give a boost to the organic industry.

“Roads will be developed in such a way that the farmers can carry their produce easily to the nearest market places and students can go to the educational institutions without facing any difficulty. Budgetary allocation has been made for Karbi Anglong’s development. Establishment of a medical college and a DIET together with upgradation of Assam University campus into a full-fledged one will be taken up by the government,” Sonowal said.

Terming the Karbi Anglong festival as a great unifying force, Sonowal said that the festival will help to further strengthen the greater Assamese society. "Towards this end, we gave to work together to strengthen the greater Assamese society," he said.

“Dr. Bhupen Hazarika had said the Karbis stamped their own identity through their activities and work culture. Bishnu Prasad Rabha referred to the Karbis as Columbus of Assam. This amply reflects the inherent characteristics of the Karbi people,” Sonowal said.

Terming Rongmilir Hahi, authored by noted litterateur Rongbong Terang, as a gem of Assamese literature, Sonowal said that the contributions made by eminent personalities of Karbi Anglong have enriched the Assamese society and that it will further bloom and flourish if the students of the district are armed with knowledge.

“We have to rise in unison when faced with danger. We have to further strengthen the bond of unity and amity to keep the anti-national forces at bay and to keep a strict vigil so that no illegal foreigners can enter the state,” Sonowal said.

Earlier, a one minute silence was observed in the memory of those who died in Kokrajhar violence on Saturday.

Assam Governor PB Acharya also attended in the session.

The open session was attended, among others, by MLAs Sum Ronghang, Numal Momin, Aminul Haque Laskar, CEO, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Tuliram Ronghang, EM Mangal Singh Timung and Executive Member Dima Hasao Autonomous Council Samuel Sanson.
