Saradha scam: Madan Mitra gets conditional bail, CBI to move to higher court

Kolkata, Sept 9 (IBNS): A local court in Kolkata on Friday granted conditional bail to former West Bengal cabinet minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Madan Mitra for the second time, 629 days after he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with Saradha chit fund scam case.

During two-day long hearing at Alipore Court since Thursday, Madan Mitra's counsels claimed that their client was not an influential person anymore, as he left cabinet and lost recently concluded Bengal assembly election, and plead for his bail with any condition.

Meanwhile, CBI's lawyers appealed to the court to reject his bail as he could hamper the investigation process, using his influences.

However, the court on Friday granted conditional bail to Madan Mitra on two Court-Ordered Debt (COD) bond of rupees 15 lakh each.

The court also directed Madan Mitra to submit his passport in local police station and to visit CBI's office once in every week to cooperate them in the Saradha probe.

Madan Mitra was granted bail from the same court earlier on October 31 in 2015 and his bail was dismissed later by the Calcutta High Court on November 19.

However, the lawyers of CBI told IBNS that they would move to the Calcutta High Court in next few days, opposing Madan Mitra's bail.

After a marathon questioning session, the CBI arrested Madan Mitra on December 12 in 2014 in connection with the multi-crore Saradha financial scam and submitted a charge sheet against him last year.
