Saradha scam: Court extends Madan Mitra's jail custody by 14 days

Kolkata, Jan 16 (IBNS): Accepting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)'s appeal and rejecting his bail plea, the Alipore Court on Friday sent Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and West Bengal sports and transport minister Madan Mitra to judicial custody for another 14 days.

After 14 days of jail custody, Mitra was produced in the Alipore court on Friday.

The lawyers of Madan Mitra pleaded for their client's bail.

Opposing their bail pleas, CBI lawyer Partha Sarathi Dutta told the judge that if Madan Mitra got bail, he might influence the evidences.

"We are demanding for a judicial custody for another 14 days," Partha Sarathi added.

After listening to both the sides, the judge rejected the bail plea and sent Mitra to judicial custody for another 14 days.

CBI also demanded permission from the judge to quiz Madan Mitra in jail custody. The judge gave them permission and told that the CBI could interrogate Mitra in jail between Jan 17 to 24.

He will be produced again in the court on Jan 30.

A few followers of Mitra were present in front of the court on Friday. They shouted slogans when Mitra was being produced in the court.

Heavy security arrangements were made outside the court area to control any untoward situation.

After a marathon 5 hours of questioning, the CBI arrested Madan Mitra on Dec 12 in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam.

The Saradha Group, that went bust last year, left lakhs of depositors in a fix.
