Mumbai/IBNS: IRS officer Sameer Wankhede's tenure with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), which was marked by controversy, would end on December 31, media reports said.

Sameer Wankhede is a 2008-batch Indian Revenue Service officer. He was on deputation to the NCB since September 2020 and is currently Mumbai zonal director of the anti-drug agency.

Before this, he was posted in the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

Wankhede had been involved in action against the drug syndicates allegedly involving Bollywood celebrities which surfaced post the suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

In October this year, a team led by Sameer Wankhede allegedly recovered drugs during a raid on a cruise ship off the Mumbai coast and arrested actor Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan along with others.

As the investigations continued, the NCB officials were accused of extorting money from Shah Rukh Khan for his jailed son's release.

He was also attacked by Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik, who accused him of using a false caste certificate to get a job under the SC/ST quota despite being a born Muslim.

Malik also targetted Wankhede's family, including his sister, who is a criminal lawyer.

Sameer Wankhede denied the allegation and his father filed a defamation suit against Malik, an NCP leader.

No announcement has been made where Wankhede would be posted next.
