Sadhguru breaks down as 80 Isha yatra members go missing in Nepal-Tibet floods

Isha Foundation founder and spiritual leader Jaggi Vasudev, popularly known as Sadhguru, broke down while speaking to followers at the foundation's camp in Saga, Tibet, after 80 members of an Isha group travelling on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra went missing following a flash flood near the Nepal-Tibet border.

Sadhguru said the group was inside an immigration building at Gyirong when the disaster struck.

He described the incident as a "terrible and extraordinary event" in a video shared on his YouTube channel.

Last contact minutes before flood

According to Sadhguru, the missing group, identified as the S3 group, had been encountered by another Isha group during the pilgrimage as they travelled in opposite directions.

He said the foundation last received a message from the group's leader at 9:05 am, informing them that they had reached the immigration facility. The flood struck around nine minutes later, at approximately 9:14 am.

Sadhguru said the group leader, who had been a full-time Isha volunteer for more than two decades, had a Nepalese phone that never became active after the incident.

"If he had crossed over, his Nepal phone should have come active. It did not come. So literally the entire group was there in the building," he said.

80 pilgrims from several countries missing

The missing group comprises 34 men and 46 women from several countries.

They include 22 people from the United States, 12 from Canada, 11 from Australia, nine from the United Kingdom, four from Germany, three each from France and Nepal, and two each from the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore and Spain.

There is also one pilgrim each from Finland, Hungary, Israel, Lithuania, the Philippines, Portugal, Russia and South Africa.

Three Isha volunteers and a doctor who were staying at nearby hotels are also unaccounted for.

Thousands feared missing

Speaking about the wider disaster, Sadhguru referred to reports from India suggesting that 484 people were missing on the Nepal side.

He said there was still "absolutely no information" from the Tibetan side and estimated that the overall number of people unaccounted for could be "anywhere around 1,500 plus".

Cause of flood still unclear

Sadhguru said the exact cause of the disaster had not yet been established, citing unconfirmed reports of a possible lake burst and an earthquake.

"We don't know," he said, visibly emotional as he spoke about the missing pilgrims.

He added that roads and telecommunications networks in the affected region had been disrupted, making it difficult to establish contact with the site.

Embassies being contacted

Sadhguru said efforts were underway to obtain permission to reach the affected area and locate the missing members.

He said the Isha Foundation was seeking assistance through the Indian and Chinese embassies in India, while the US Embassy was also working on the matter.

Rescue and relief efforts continue as authorities and organisations attempt to determine the scale of the disaster and trace those still missing.
