Rajnath asks Delhi cops to focus on security for NE people

New Delhi, Feb 16 (IBNS): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has called upon the Delhi Police to focus on providing security to people from the North Eastern Region (NER).

Addressing the 68th Raising Day function of Delhi Police here on Monday, the Union Home Minister said that the people from the NER should not feel alienated in the national capital.

Flagging Women’s Safety as another major concern, Singh said that the Centre has also asked all state governments to constitute Investigative Units on Crimes against Women which will investigate crimes like rape.

Lauding Delhi Police for coming out with innovative technological solutions like ‘Himmat,’ he said that Himmat is an effective application launched by the Delhi Police to provide women security in Delhi.

The Union Home Minister asked the Delhi Police to work in close cooperation with the new State Government in Delhi for the development of the national capital.

He remarked that the development of the States is imperative to the development of the nation.

Singh advised the Delhi Police to give protection to the vast majority of poor people. “Police should be sensitive to the right to livelihood of the street vendors, rickshaw pullers and small traders and strive to win their blessings," said he.

Commenting on the security of minorities, the Union Home Minister assured that the Centre and the Delhi Police will extend full cooperation to ensure security of the minorities and their religious institutions.

Singh said that the Centre has recently constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the '1984 riots'. He said that he was confident that now justice would be done to those affected by these riots.

Laying stress on adoption of modern technology for effective policing in the 21st century, the Union Home Minister said that the new procedure for issuing the Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is a step towards that direction.

He said that the Delhi Police should take lead to realise the Prime Minister’s dream of 'SMART Police' (S-Sensitive and Strict; M-Modern with mobility; A- Alert and Accountable; R- Reliable and Responsive; T- Trained and Techno-savvy).

Singh said, “I am aware of the challenges facing Delhi Police; providing security to a diverse city like Delhi is extremely difficult task.”

“In spite of all these challenges Delhi Police's performance has been excellent,” he added.

The Union Home Minister announced Rupees 5 crore to Delhi Police Education Welfare Fund to construct school buildings.

Earlier, Singh inspected the guard of honour and took the salute of the parade. Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi also spoke on the occasion.
