Rajiv assassination: SC asks CBI to file fresh report on Perarivalan's role

New Delhi/UNI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the probe agency in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, to file another detailed status report narrating the role of one of the convicts, A G Perarivalan.

"Please file a fresh status report about the use of belt bomb by Perarivalan in the case," said a bench, headed by Justice L N Rao, at end of the brief hearing.

The apex court heard from lawyers of both Perarivalan and the Central Bureau of Investigation side.

It expressed displeasure over the findings by the CBI and asked the probe agency to file the same report in a detailed fresh manner.

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition by Perarivalan against the Tamil Nadu Government in the case.

Perarivalan claimed innocence in the May 21, 1991, assassination of the former Prime Minister in Sriprumbudur, Tamil Nadu by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam woman bomber.

The apex court sought a detailed status report from the CBI and deferred the matter for further hearing, but no date has been fixed by it.
