Rajasthan govt invites agitating Gujjars for second round of talks today
Jaipur, May 25 (IBNS): Amid a standoff over the issue of five percent reservation in government jobs, the Rajasthan government has invited the protesting Gujjars to hold fresh round of talks at the state secretariat in Jaipur at 3 pm on Monday.
The Gujjar community has threatened to intensify the agitation after its first round of talks with Rajasthan government to discuss the issue failed.
Besides blocking rail tracks and disrupting the Delhi-Mumbai route, the Gujjars also blocked National Highway 11 at Dausa on Sunday. More than 100 trains were cancelled and an equal number have been diverted as the protest by Gujjars entered its fourth day on Sunday.
The representatives of the Gujjar community met Rajasthan ministers Rajendra Rathore, Arun Chaturvedi and Hem Singh Bhadana in Bayana on Saturday.
They reportedly accused the state government of not coming up with concrete proposal on the issue.
While the government said there will be another round of meeting on Monday in Jaipur, Gujjar leaders did not confirm whether they would turn up for the same.
On Thursday evening, the Gujjar Reservation Front of Rajasthan had called for a 'mahapanchayat' or big meeting in Samogar village of Bharatpur.
They have said that they will not relent till their demand for reservation in the state is met.
The Rajasthan government had earlier said it cannot make any promises, with the matter in court.
Gujjars have been demanding reservation since 2007. They were given 5 per cent reservation in a separate quota, but as that exceeded the 50 per cent quota mandated by the Supreme Court, the matter is now heard in the Rajasthan High Court.
