Rail Safety Panel inquiry says rains leading to overcrowding resulted in the Mumbai rail over-bridge stampede

Mumbai, Oct 11 (IBNS): The Railway Safety Panel in its report regarding the recent stampede on the Elphinstone Railway Overbridge has said that the accident occurred due to rains resulting in overcrowding on the bridge, according to media reports on Wednesday.

The incident which happened on Sep 29 left 29 dead and many injured.

The panel recorded statements of 30 commuters who were injured in the incident and examined video footage of the incident, media reported.

Although the report did not support the theory of a short circuit on the bridge causing the stampede but did not rule out chances of people carrying heavy luggage losing balance in the rush and resulting in the chaos and stampede.

The report has been submitted to Anil Kumar, GM Western Railway.
