Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday named incumbent chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi as the party's CM candidate for the upcoming Assembly polls in Punjab.

Welcoming the announcement, Channi tweeted: "I sincerely thank the Congress High Command and people of Punjab for bestowing their trust in me. As you have seen us work so hard in the last 111 days to take Punjab forward, I assure you to take Punjab and Punjabis on the path of progress with new zeal and dedication."

The Congress last Sunday released its third list of candidates for Punjab where it fielded Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi from a second seat - Bhadaur.

Channi is also fighting the poll from Chamkaur Sahib seat, where he is the sitting MLA.
