Rahul Gandhi hoists flag on Congress' 134th foundation day

New Delhi, Dec 28 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi hoisted the national flag on the occasion of his party's 134th foundation day on Friday.

Along with the Congress chief, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot and other senior party leaders were present at the programme.

Following the hoisting, Rahul tweeted saying, "On #CongressFoundationDay let us celebrate & acknowledge the selfless service & contributions of millions of Congress workers, men & women, who have helped build & sustain the Congress party over the ages. We owe these unsung heroes our gratitude & respect. I salute them all."

Congress, the country's oldest political party, was founded on the same day in 1885.

Under the leadership of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, the Congress took a major role in the country's independence movement in late 19th and early 20th century.

After independence, the party was steered by former Prime Ministers,  Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, in different eras.

Late Rajiv Gandhi's wife Sonia Gandhi also served as the Congress chief until Rahul took over in 2017.
