Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh raises 'Khalistan' issue during his meeting with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau

Amritsar, Feb 21 (IBNS): Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said he raised the Khalistan issue during his meeting with visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau here.

Trudeau arrived in Amrtisar on Wednesday.

After meeting the Canadian leader, Singh told media: "I raised issue of Khalistan as it's the primary issue, as there is money coming in from various countries including Canada."

Singh later tweeted and said he was happy after receiving 'categorical assurance' from the PM that his nation does not support any separatist movement.

" Really happy to receive categorical assurance from Canadian PM @JustinTrudeau that his country does not support any separatist movement. His words are a big relief to all of us here in India and we look forward to his government’s support in tackling fringe separatist elements," Singh tweeted.

Clouds were formed over the meeting after several Indian medias had earlier reported that Singh will not meet with Trudeau as a backlash of Canada's alleged involvement with the Sikh nationalist movement.

The Sikh nationalist movement is a movement which aims to make Punjab region of India, a separate country named Khalistan.

Singh flew from state capital Chandigarh to Amritsar to have an interaction with Trudeau.

Trudeau was welcomed in Amritsar by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu.

The Canadian PM has also visited the Golden Temple of Amritsar.

Trudeau, who will stay in India till February 23, is yet to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
