| @indiablooms | Dec 19, 2019, at 02:27 pm

Imphal, Dec 19 (UNI) Left parties and various individuals today protested against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) affected a normal life in the state.

CPI, CPI, AIFB and RSP imposed a 12 hour state wide general strike (6 am to 6 pm) as part of the nationwide protest against CAA.

Most educational institutes, business establishments, banks were also closed.

Inter and intra state passenger services were suspended. Most transporters also supported the strike.

Inspite of warning by police not to resort to stir on CAA issue anti CAA activists continued to come out on their own and staged peaceful protests. Police however
did not allow any sort of protests. Sit in protests were also not allowed.

Security was beefed up and large numbers of security personnel were seen doing duty on the streets. There were no violence so far.

Large numbers of women also joined the protests and they said they will continue the stir as the government was trying to wipe out indigenous people of Manipur and other north eastern states and flood the area with illegal immigrants.

L Sotin Kumar, a Left leader said the CAA is unconstitutional and the BJP is trying to form a Hindu nation.

Some students who tried to display placards denouncing CAA said the government is imposing various laws without knowing the ground reality in north east and they said the apathy is clearly shown by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah repeatedly saying that the Muslims will not be affected.

The displacement of large numbers of indigenous people of north east by illegal migrants since the partition and complete takeover of administration by immigrants
in states like Tripura, Sikkim were not highlighted, they said.

They pointed out the indigenous populace has decreased to 30 percent in Tripura and Sikkim and the indigenous people have no say in the administration as they are minorities, they said.

When the region is demanding protection of indigenous people the BJP government is trying to swarm the area with immigrants on religious ground and for political mileage, they added.
