Protest turns violent in Manipur, seven UNC protesters injured

Guwahati, Jan 3 (IBNS): At least seven protesters, including three women, were injured in violence-hit Manipur on Tuesday as security personnel fired on protesters who tried to break out the security stoppage in front of a district administration office.

The incident took place in Senapati district while the United Naga Council (UNC) protesters tried to enter forcefully into the office.

According to the reports, the UNC leaders, who continued economic blockade against Manipur since Nov 1, on Tuesday called a gherao programme in Senapati district.

Situation turned more violent while protesters tried to forcefully enter into the district administration office campus.

The police warned them but the mob turned deaf ear to them.

The security personnel resorted to lathi charge and firing tear gas shell at the mob to control the violent situation.

The injured persons were rushed to nearest hospital.

Several violent incidents, militants attack on security personnel have been reported in the poll bound north- eastern Indian state in the past two months.
