Prophet row: Gautam Gambhir slams 'secular liberals' for 'silence' on 'death threats' against Nupur Sharma

New Delhi/IBNS: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Gautam Gambhir has called out the "secular liberals" for their "silence" on the death threats given to his now suspended party colleague Nupur Sharma, whose controversial comment on Prophet Muhammed has drawn fury from the Muslims across the country.

Gambhir tweeted, "Silence of so called ‘secular liberals’ on the sickening display of hatred & death threats throughout the country against a woman who has apologised is surely DEAFENING!"

Recurrent protests have rocked multiple cities including West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, which have a sizeable Muslim population.

Reports of vandalism and ransacking emerged from West Bengal's densely Muslim populated district Howrah, which also houses the state secretariat.

Following backlash from the Gulf countries, the BJP swung into action and suspended Sharma and her colleague Naveen Jindal who too had made a controversial comment on Prophet Muhammed.

Till Saturday, over 200 people in Uttar Pradesh and around 70 in West Bengal have been arrested in connection with the riots that have left the common people suffering due to the imposition of Section 144 and suspension on internet services.
