Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slams UP govt for failing to protect Unnao victim, Mayawati asks for strict laws

Unnao/New Delhi/IBNS: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slammed the Yogi Adityanath government after the 23-year old Unnao rape survivor- who was burnt by five including two accused in the rape case days ago- died on Friday night.

Priyanka took to her Twitter handle to say, "Keeping in mind the previous rape incident in Unnao, why didn't the government provide security to the victim? What action has been taken against the officer who had denied to file an FIR? What the state government is doing to prevent tortures against women taking place every day?"

The victim, who was set on fire on Thursday, died at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Friday. She suffered cardiac arrest at 10 minutes past 11 on Friday night and was declared dead 30 minutes later at 11:40 pm.

Reacting to the victim's death, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief, Mayawati, tweeted, "The death of the girl who was burnt in Unnao is saddening and painful. The BSP is with the family of the deceased. The UP government must take action to provide justice to the girl."

"The state governments across the country must instill fear in the minds of such criminals and the central government must make laws to ensure strict punishment like death sentence of these criminals keeping the Unnao case in mind," the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said in a follow up tweet.

The victim was set on fire on Thursday morning while she was heading to a local court for the hearing on the rape case filed by the girl.

Three men including the two accused in the rape case were arrested for setting the victim on fire.

The girl in March had filed the rape case against two men from her paternal village in Unnao.

The two men had allegedly raped her and filmed the act.
