New Delhi, May 13 (IBNS): Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday greeted the nation on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima, the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha, which will be observed on Wednesday.

"On the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima, I convey greetings and good wishes to all my fellow citizens," Mukherjee said in his message.

"The life and teachings of Lord Buddha have universal significance. The ideals of non-violence, peace, compassion and service to humanity embodied in his teachings have profoundly impacted human history and the course of civilization. A large number of persons all over the world follow Buddhism due to its universal appeal," he said.

"May Lord Buddha’s message infuse our thoughts, words and deeds and serve as a beacon guiding us on the path of universal brotherhood," the President said.

In a message, the Prime Minister said that the life of Lord Buddha "inspires us to follow the path of truth and brotherhood and work for the betterment of the downtrodden. His philosophy of ahimsa, peace and love is timeless."

"May this festival strengthen our commitment to compassion and an egalitarian world," he added.
