New Delhi/IBNS: President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday appointed former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi to the Rajya Sabha.

"...the President is pleased to nominate Shri Ranjan Gogoi to the Council of States to fill the vacancy caused due to the retirement of one of the nominated member," a Gazette notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs stated.

A few members of the judiciary have made it so far to the arena of the legislature.

Justice Gogoi had retired as the CJI in November last year.

His term as the Chief Justice of India lasted for around 13 months.

Reacting to the nomination by President, Congress tweeted: "We welcome the appointment of Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the Chief Justice of India. We hope that during his tenure he will continue to push the cause of justice as he has done previously in his career."
