'Pray only to Alla': Controversy erupts over Mohanlal offering puja at Sabarimala for Mammootty

A controversy erupted after superstar Mohanlal offered prayers at Sabarimala for Malayalam star Mammootty earlier this month, with critics demanding an apology, pointing out that the latter is a Muslim.

Clarifying his stand, Mohanlal has said that prayers are personal, and the puja was held after the actor suffered a minor heart setback.

Mohanlal, who has been promoting his upcoming film 'L2: Empuraan', went to Sabarimala to offer prayers on March 18.

During the "Usha puja", he had given a note to the priest that mentioned Mammootty's birth name, Muhammed Kutty, and his birth star 'Vishakham'.

A receipt issued by the Devaswom office mentioning the above went viral on social media, with a section of users hailing it as an instance of communal harmony.

However, another section pointed out Mammootty is a Muslim, and Hindu prayers violated Islamic beliefs.

O Abdullah, an influencer and the former editor of Madhyamam newspaper, asked Mammootty to apologise if he had asked Mohanlal to offer prayers on his behalf.

He quoted Islamic laws stating that only Allah should be prayed to by someone who follows the Islamic faith.

Mohanlal, who shares a close bond with Mammootty despite their professional rivalry, has refuted the controversy. Speaking to NDTV in Mumbai, he said he had given Mammootty's name and star for the puja at Sabarimala, along with that of his family.

"Fortunately, or unfortunately, it came out," he said.

Filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, who joined the chat alongside Mohanlal, said this was not the first time either of them had done something like this. "This time, it made it to the news," he added.

Talking about his bond with Mammootty, Mohanlal said he has done over 50 films with him. "We used to meet every week. We had a phone call every two-three days. We are really good friends," he said.

Mohanlal had earlier said that prayers are personal and there was nothing wrong in offering prayers for Mammootty.

Sharing an update on his health, he said Mammootty was recovering well, and there was no worry.

On being asked about how the receipt got leaked, he had suggested at a Chennai event it could have been done by an official of the Travancore Devaswom Board, which manages the Lord Ayyapa shrine in Sabarimala, said reports.
