New Delhi, Aug 7 (IBNS): President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday conveyed his grief and sympathy over the earthquake that hit the Yunnan Province of South West China on Sunday.
In his message to Chinese President Xi Jinping, Mukherjee said, "It is with profound sadness that we, in India, learned of the earthquake that occurred in South West China’s Yunnan’s province causing a tragic loss of lives and large scale destruction of property in the area. I understand that relief and rescue efforts are ongoing and I am confident that the local authorities and your Government will soon be able to restore normalcy to the affected areas."

"Excellency, I extend on behalf of the Government and the people of India, my deepest condolences to your Government and to the bereaved and displaced families. Our sympathies and prayers are with them during this difficult time," he said.

The death toll in the earthquake that hit south-western China on Sunday rose to 600 while thousands were injured in a remote region of Yunnan province, according to media reports.

The earthquake measuring 6.3 in the Richter scale also caused thousands of concrete buildings, including a school, to collapse.

According to the official Xinhua news agency, the tremor was primarily felt in Yunnan and in the neighbouring provinces of Guizhou and Sichuan with its epicentre in Longtoushan town of Yunnan’s mountainous Ludian country.

The epicentre was monitored at 27.1 degrees north latitude and 103.3 degrees east longitude with a depth of 12 kilometers, according to the CENC, said Xinhua.

Images showed many buildings reduced to rubble while many were cracked as people desperately ran for life.
