The joint resistance leadership asked people to march towards Jamia Masjid in old city’s Nowhatta area on Friday prayers but authorities imposed strict curfew across the Valley.

Since early morning, large numbers of police and CRPF men were deployed across Srinagar and all roads leading to Jamia Masjid were sealed with concertina wires.

According to locals, the forces didn’t allow them to venture out of their homes.

Amid strict restrictions, protests and clashes broke out at several places in Srinagar after Friday prayers.

A large procession of youth, men and women marched towards United Nations Military Observer Group for India and Pakistan (UNMIGOP) office here at Sonwar from Dalgate.

The protesters wanted to talk to the UNMOGIP officials and handover a resolution to them regarding Kashmir however police swung into action and fired tear smoke shells on the protesters.

Soon after Friday prayers, protest erupted across Kashmir leaving dozens injured in police and CRPF firing, some reports said four persons are admitted in hospital in critical conditions

According to late evening reports received here, nearly 40 persons were injured in clashes at Tahab in Pulwama.

At Shopian, militants lobbed a grenade on police party but it failed to explode.

Protesters ransacked bunker of 44 RR in Shopian. Clashes also erupted at Haal and Bellow in Pulwama.  The protests also erupted at Budgam while youths attacked cavalcade of SDPO and SHO Shopian.

A police spokesman said here: “The situation throughout Kashmir remained under control although there were about 70 incidents of stone pelting across the valley. The miscreants attacked a number of police and security establishments and camps."

Militants lobbed a grenade on the police and CRPF personnel deployed for law and order duty at Shopian. Grenade was later-on defused by the BD squad.

At Rohama, Rafiabad, a government building was set on fire. The deployments exercised maximum restraint in spite of such serious provocations.

During these law and order situations, eight persons, 46 police and security force personnel were injured. As a precautionary measure, curfew was put in place in the sensitive towns and areas to maintain law and order.

Earlier, police detained both Hurriyat leaders Mirwiaz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani as they wanted to reach Jamai Masjid for rally after prayers.
