New Delhi, July 26 (IBNS): As the nation observed Kargil Vijay Divas, PM Narendra Modi on Friday shared old images of himself meeting the soldiers who fought in the war against Pakistan.

He said visiting Kargil and interacting with soldiers was an 'unforgettable' moment for him.

" During the Kargil War in 1999, I had the opportunity to go to Kargil and show solidarity with our brave soldiers. This was the time when I was working for my Party in J&K as well as Himachal Pradesh. The visit to Kargil and interactions with soldiers are unforgettable," Modi tweeted.

It was on July 26, 1999, the Indian Army successfully took control of posts at a treacherous high altitude and glaciated terrain across the Himalayas in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, after fighting for 60 days.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind also praised the brave soldiers of the nation who fought in the war and tweeted: "On Kargil Vijay Diwas, a grateful nation acknowledges the gallantry of our Armed Forces on the heights of Kargil in 1999. We salute the grit and valour of those who defended India, and record our everlasting debt to those who never returned. Jai Hind!."
