New Delhi/Colombo, Aug 18 (IBNS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Ranil Wickremesinghe on the 'wonderful performance' of his alliance in the parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka.

"Spoke to Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe and congratulated him on his alliance's wonderful performance in the elections," Modi said.

"I am confident that under Mr. Wickremesinghe's leadership, bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka will get stronger," he said.

"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the people of Sri Lanka on the peaceful conduct of polls", the Prime Minister said.

United National Party (UNP) is moving close to a simple majority.

Key rival Mahinda Rajapaksa has admitted defeat in the parliamentary polls of the island nation.

Wickremesing is all set to take oath as the new PM of Sri Lanka.
