PM Modi wishes people of Kerala on Onam

New Delhi, Aug 25 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday greeted people of Kerala on Onam, an annual festival, at a time when the southern state is devastated by rain-caused flood.

Modi tweeted, "May this Onam give further strength to the people of Kerala to overcome the adversities they have been facing for the past few days. The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with Kerala and prays for the happiness as well as prosperity of it’s citizens."

Flood has disrupted normal life in the southern state.

More than 400 people have lost their lives in Kerala.

Thousands of people are currently staying in relief camps in the state.

Apart from Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind too tweeted on the occasion of the festival.

His tweet reads, "Good wishes to fellow citizens, particularly to our brothers and sisters in Kerala, on Onam. May this festival mark a new beginning for all those in Kerala recovering in the aftermath of the floods, and gradually beginning to rebuild their lives #PresidentKovind"

Onam is an annual Hindu festival with origins in the state of Kerala.

It falls in the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam, which in Gregorian calendar overlaps with the months August and September.

The festival commemorates the Mahabali, Vamana (Vishnu avatar), Kashyapa and Parashurama-related mythologies of Hinduism.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu tweeted, "The festivities of Onam last for ten days across Kerala are marked by diverse activities ranging from boat races, dance events to floral designs and martial arts competitions. May the festival usher in peace, prosperity and happiness in our country.
