New Delhi/Kolkata, May 23 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in West Bengal on a day’s tour on Friday, May 25, a government press release said.

During his visit, the PM Modi will preside over the convocation of Visva Bharati in Shantiniketan.

According to the Visva Bharati rules, the Prime Minister of India is the Chancellor or Acharya of the University.

After presiding over the Convocation, Prime Minister Modi, along with the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, will inaugurate the Bangladesh Bhavan at the University campus.

After inauguration of the Bhavan, Modi and Hasina will hold bilateral discussions there.

This is Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Visva-Bharati as Chancellor of the University.

The last convocation was held in 2013.

This year, some 10,000 students will receive their degrees at the Convocation.

The Convocation will start at 10.45 am and conclude around 11.30 am.

This time 'Deshikottam' will not be conferred during the Convocation, confirmed Visva-Bharati sources.

Visva-Bharati has decided to present the replica of the first edition of Rabindranath Tagore’s anthology of poems-‘Gitanjali’, published in London in 1912, among other souvenirs, to Prime Minister Modi.

Governor of West Bengal Keshari Nath Tripathi and Chief Minister Mamata Bandyopadhyay are also scheduled to be present at the Convocation.
