New Delhi, Oct 2 (IBNS): Prime minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his 148th birth anniversary on Monday.

Modi went to Raj Ghat on Monday morning to pay homage to Gandhi.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known as Mahatma Gandhi, was the leader of Indian Independence movement against the British rule. He is known for several movements like Salt March, Non-cooperation movement, Champaran agitation with an aim to throw out the British rule from India.

Gandhi was born in Gujarat and trained himself in law in London. He assumed the leadership of Congress in 1921 and began his nationwide campaigns to achieve the social issues. He also campaigned to attain Swaraj or self rule.

Prime minister Modi, after coming to power, started a campaign named Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on Gandhi's birth anniversary in 2014, taking a pledge to keep the country clean.

Modi even urged the people of the country to stop open defecation through Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
