Amaravati, AP, Oct 22 (IBNS): Amid fanfare, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the presence of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday laid the foundation stone of Amaravati, the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh, touted as the People's Capital.
Amid cheers and songs and rituals, the PM laid the foundation stone. Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu was also accompanying him.

Modi is on a day long visit to the state.

Earlier, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu tweeted: "A day when millions across the globe will watch #Amaravati's birth has arrived. Let's build #ManaAmaravatiManaRajadhani together."

A dream project of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who leads the Telugu Desam Party-BJP government in Andhra Pradesh, the CM said he will work towards making a great capital city with discipline and culture.

The event was streamed live.

The master plan of Amaravati was designed by the Singapore government. The city will cover an area of 217 sq. km. between Vijayawada and Guntur towns.

A new capital of Andhra Pradesh was necessitated after the creation of Telangana with the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. The present capital Hyderabad, which is now a joint capital of Telangana and residuary AP, will go to Telangana in 2024.
