New Delhi, Oct 19 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday greeted the nation on the occasion of Diwali.

"Greetings to my countrymen on the auspicious occasion of Diwali," the Prime Minister's greetings in Hindi read.

He further added, "May this auspicious festival brighten your lives with prosperity and good health and may there be happiness all around."

Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the biggest Hindu festival, predominantly celebrated by the said community mostly living in the northern part of India.

According to epic Mahabharata, it celebrates the return of the Pandavas after 13 years of exile.

The festival is closely associated with Goddess Lakshmi, the Vedic goddess of wealth.
