Patna stampede leaves 32 killed

Patna, Oct 3 (IBNS) At least 32 people were killed in a stampede during Dussehra celebrations in Bihar's Patna city on Friday.

According to reports, several others were  injured in the mishap which took place at the Gandhi Maidan shortly after 7pm.

More than 50,000 people at gathered at the park to witness the burning of Ravana’s effigy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the loss of lives in the mishap.

Modi spoke to Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi over telephone in the evening, and reviewed the situation arising out of the stampede in Gandhi Maidan in Patna.

" The Prime Minister has condoled the loss of lives in the incident. He has sanctioned Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the critically injured, from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund," the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi also condoled the loss of lives in the incident.

" Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi has expressed shock and grief over the deaths and injuries in a stampede in #Patna today," the Congress party tweeted.
