Parliament witnesses uproar over communal violence debate
New Delhi, Aug 13 (IBNS): Discussion over the Communal Violence Bill created huge uproar in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday with the Congress party alleging that maximum cases of communal violence have been reported since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took the reigns of the government.
Making a statement in the Parliament, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that the government data shows that during May-June, there have been 113 incidents of communal violence.
"Why have there been so many riots in the past 2-3 months? More than 600 riots have taken place in the last three months and state governments have been blamed. Who is behind these incidents? It can't only be a coincidence that riots are taking place only in poll-bound states," he said.
He said the government is taking incidents of communal violence lightly.
He alleged the government of polarising the atmosphere for vote bank politics.
Reacting to Kharge's statement, the ruling BJP also hit back and accused the Congress of working on Pakistan's agenda.
BJP MP Yogi Adityanath said, "The Congress was silent when there were incidents that took place in Mumbai at Azad Maidan where police people were beaten up. They also did not raise their voice when Kashmiri Pandits were displaced from their homes. They are working on Pakistan Agenda."
Earlier in the day, following uproar, the Speaker adjourned the House for half an hour.
The Congress had been pressing an early debate on communal violence in the country and criticised the delay in conducting the same.
