Panic grips Assam over NRC re-verification notice

Guwahati, Aug 5 (IBNS): Panic gripped among a section of people mostly from the minority community in several lower Assam’s districts after the National Register of Citizens (NRC) authorities have served re-verification notices.

Thousands of people in several districts in lower Assam had received re-verification notices on Saturday and asked them to appear before the designated authorities, some outside their home district in the next 24 hours as against the earlier 15 days period.

According to the reports, around 25,000 people alone in Kamrup district have been served re-verification notices by the NRC authorities on Saturday and asked them to appear before the designated authorities located around 350-500 km away from their homes in next 24 hours.

The NRC rule stated that, people must be given 15 days of notice, but thousands of people received the re-verification notices and given them only 24 hours time.

The Supreme Court has directed the NRC authorities to publish the final NRC on August 31.

On Sunday, the villagers of Nagarbera in Kamrup district, who received the re-verification notices, had staged protest against the NRC authorities and the state government and demanded to give them more times.

“We have received the notice today and asked us to appear the designated authorities at Sivasagar, about 500 km from Tupamari. If we start now, then need minimum 24 hours to reach the destination. How it is possible. We think that, it is a conspiracy against us,” a local villager said.

The complete draft of NRC, containing names of 28,983,677 out of 32,991,384 applicants, was published on July 30 last year.

Around 40.07 lakh people were left out from the complete draft of NRC.

On June 26 last, the NRC authorities had published an additional draft exclusion list consisting of 1,02,462 persons.
