Paid News case: Ashok Chavan gets EC notice

New Delhi, July 13 (IBNS) Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan is facing fresh trouble as the Election Commission on Sunday slapped a show-cause notice on him as he failed to lodge his election expenses as per law in connection with a paid-news case.

The Commission asked former Maharashtra Chief Minister  to respond as to why he should not be disqualified.

It has set a 20-day deadline for Chavan to respond to the notice.

"The Commission hereby has directed that the respondent has failed to lodge is account of election expenses in the manner required by the Act and rules," read the ECI order.

"The Commission directs the respondent to show cause in terms of Rule 89(5) of the 1961-Rules why he should not be disqualified under section 10A of the 1951 Act. The respondent is directed to submit his representation, if any, to the Commission within 20 days from the date of receipt of his order," it said.

The 104-page order was issued by the  full bench of the EC comprising of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) VS Sampath and Election Commissioners HS Brahma and SNA Zaidi.
