OROP suicide: Rahul Gandhi released

New Delhi, Nov 2 (IBNS): Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was released subsequently by the Delhi Police after he was detained at police station on Wednesday, when he went to meet the family members of the deceased ex-serviceman, who committed suicide reportedly on the one rank one pension (OROP) issue, according to media reports.

He was detained for nearly 70 minutes, media reported

Rahul Gandhi questioned the Delhi's police about the arrest of the deceased veteran's son, media reported.

He said, "Aren't you ashamed of arresting the veteran's son?"

Delhi Police senior official said the department will not tolerate demonstrations in front and within the hospital.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, commenting on the issue, said, "Police will do what it takes to reduce risks," according to media reports.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came out in support of Gandhi and said it was 'unfortunate' that he was stopped from visiting 'bereaved family' of the jawan.

"Very sad that one of our former jawans committed suicide. Unfortunate that @OfficeOfRG & @msisodia stopped from visiting bereaved family 1/2," Banerjee tweeted.

She said: "They should be allowed. Our representative is on his way to Delhi 2/2."
