OROP issue: Political leaders at ex-serviceman's funeral in Haryana

New Delhi, Nov 3 (IBNS): Ex-serviceman Ram Kishen Grewal, who committed suicide on the 'one rank one pension' (OROP) issue, was cremated on Thursday at his village Bamla in Haryana, according to media reports.

The funeral was attended by leaders of various non-BJP parties, including Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, senior Congress leader Kamal Nath,  Trinamool Congress' Derek O'Brien, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, and others, media reported.

The veteran was protesting over the OROP issue at Jantar Mantar in Delhi when he committed suicide on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition parties are engaged in a verbal duel over the issue.

Aam Admi Party has said they will hold a condolence meeting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

The BJP has said that the veteran's death should not be made into a political issue.

BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said that Congress paid no heed to the OROP issue for 43 years, media reported.

In a televised interview on NDTV, Rao said that Rahul Gandhi is doing all this to get political mileage.

In another televised interview on NDTV, Manish Tiwari of the Congress said that the government behaved in a high-handed fashion.

The Union Defence Ministry has said that whether the former serviceman was tacitly encouraged to commit suicide must be investigated, reported NDTV.
