Open to alliance with Congress in Madhya Pradesh: Akhilesh Yadav

| @indiablooms | Jun 06, 2018, at 02:14 pm

Lucknow, Jun 6 (IBNS): Buoyant by the success of a united Opposition in Uttar Pradesh bypoll, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav has said his organisation is open to any kind of  alliance with the Congress to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, which will be held later this year.

Holding a press conference on Wednesday, Akhilesh, the former UP Chief Minister, said the SP and its alliance partners too have a formula to win elections like the BJP.

He also stressed that the MP state elections will be fought on the basis of issues and not any personality, taking a slight dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi without taking his name.

Akhilesh  hit out at the BJP-ruled central government over demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST) on Wednesday.

The SP president's announcement came just a week after a united Opposition could manage to defeat the BJP in Kairana Lok Sabha by-poll.

In Kairana, the SP, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Congress-supported Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate Tabassum Hasan defeated the BJP.

The united Opposition had created a headache for the BJP first in early 2018 in Gorakhpur and Phulpur parliamentary constituencies, which went to by-polls after they were vacated by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya after assuming their posts.

In both the seats, the SP, with the support of the BSP and the Congress, emerged victorious.

Talks are also going on about a possible united Opposition at the national level to defeat the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The Opposition had already flaunted a united face in the swearing-in ceremony of Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy as the Karnataka Chief Minister.

The three crucial state polls in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are due to be held in 2018.
