One villager hurt as NSCN (IM) militants open fire along Assam-Manipur border

Guwahati: One civilian was injured when suspected NSCN (IM) militants opened fire on a group for not accepting their demands in Assam’s Cachar district along Assam-Manipur border on Tuesday.

The incident took place at Shamtila village in Jirighat area.

The area is located just 500 metres away from the Assam-Manipur border.

The injured person was rushed to the hospital.

Cachar district Superintendent of Police (SP) Ramandeep Kaur said Rongmei Naga tribe people dominates the area where the incident occured.

“We have received information that, some NSCN (IM) militants came to the village and engaged argument with the villagers and then the militants fired upon the villagers. One villager was injured in the incident. Our police team had rushed to the area shifted the injured person to the hospital,” the Cachar district SP said.

She further said investigation is on and police have launched an operation to nab the culprits.

“NSCN (IM) militants are behind the incident and we are now dominating the area,” the top police official said.

Meanwhile, Assam police have informed its Manipur counterpart about the incident and police forces of both states are working in coordination.
