Obama accepts Modi's R-Day invite

New Delhi, Nov 21 (IBNS): The United States on Friday confirmed that President Barack Obama has accepted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Mopdi's invitation to be the chief guest at the Asian nation's Republic Day celebrations next year.

The White House in a statement said: "At the invitation of Prime Minister Modi, the President will travel to India in January 2015 to participate in the Indian Republic Day celebration in New Delhi as the Chief Guest. "

The White House said Obama will meet Modi and other Indian officials in a bid to expand the strategic partnership between the two nations.

"This visit will mark the first time a U.S. president will have the honor of attending Republic Day, which commemorates the adoption of India’s constitution. The President will meet with the Prime Minister and Indian officials to strengthen and expand the U.S.-India strategic partnership," it said.

Earlier, Modi had invited Obama as the Chief Guest at the Republic Day next year.

“This Republic Day, we hope to have a friend over.. . invited President Obama to be the 1st US President to grace the occasion as Chief Guest” said the Prime Minister in a statement.

In India, Republic Day commemorates the date (Jan 26, 1950) on which the Constitution of India came into force replacing the Government of India Act 1935 as the governing document of the country.
