Kolkata: Actress-turned Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha MP Roopa Ganguly's son Akash Mukherjee has been arrested and slapped several non bailable sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC), Motor Vehicles Act & Prevention of Damage to Public Property  (PDPP) Act after his car crashed into a wall near his residence last night, said sources on Friday, adding that no alcohol was found in his blood as suspected initially.

Akash will be produced before Alipore court later in the day.

Akash was first detained and then arrested by Kolkata Police after his car crashed near his residence on the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) on Friday night.

His lawyer said, "Akash's car rammed into a private club's wall and police slapped PDPP section on him. This section is only applicable when somebody damages a govt/public property. We will inform the matter to court today."

Sources in the police said no presence of alcohol was found in Akash's blood during preliminary medical tests and that's why drunken driving section was not slapped on him.

Akash claimed to the police that the accident occurred due to a technical failure.

Police have sent the vehicle for mechanical test to verify his claim.

Meanwhile, Roopa Ganguly tweeted: "My son has met with an accident near MY RESIDENCE.  I called police to tke care of it with all legal implications No favours/ politics plz."

In another tweet tagged to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she posted: "I love my son & will tk cr of him BUT, LAW SHOULD TAKE ITS OWN COURSE. न मै घलत करती हूं, न मै सेहेती हू @narendramodi"

Akash Mukherjee, son of Roopa Ganguly and her former husband Dhrubo Mukerjee, was detained and then arrested by Kolkata Police after his car crashed near the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) on its wall.

Police first started a probe to find out if Akash was drunk while driving the car. Initial reports said the car was registered in the name of Roopa Ganguly.

While no casualty was reported, Akash received minor injuries. One media report said his father came out of their apartment heading the commotion and brought him out of the car.

Roopa Ganguly, who was a popular actress in Bengali cinema and had earned national acclaim essaying the role of Draupadi in BR Chopra's Mahabharat in small screen, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2015.
